I remember Super Mario Bros.

I have never been a big fan of video games, as I always preferred outdoors activities, but I have to admit that one game grabbed my full attention to which I always stayed completely faithful, a real facionista, it is Super Mario Bros!
It was created by Nintendo in the year 1985 and had straight away a worldwide success due to a completely new concept featuring smooth-scrolling levels but most of all a real story behind it. The purposes were not only to fight and win, but a whole script was written, characters had a complex human like history, a mission was giving, where the player was the hero. While taking the game console in your hands you would become Mario or Luigi his brother, if in two-player mode.
If you remember, in each game, Mario must conquer eight worlds in order the save the Princess Peach in the Mushroom kingdom from the evil Bowser, a big and ugly turtle, king of the Koopas, also turtles. As you all know Mario receives the “famous” kiss from the princess each time he “finally” saves her, after thousand attempts which depend on good “u” are! We don’t have much information on the true nature of their relationship, but it seems quite affectionate...
Mario is a little, a bit overweight, round faced, bulbous nose with moustache, Italian plumber, not the typical hero, followed by his younger brother Luigi. We know that he loves pasta and pizza and he is from Brooklyn. Mario is human, as well as the princess Peach and Luigi, and he possesses super-human powers, like super jumping abilities, which he uses to reach new levels and fights his enemies. He is sometimes granted with super strength in other games but generally the jumping is his thing!
He is described as a kind and brave hero, speaking English with a thick Italian accent, of course! In terms of relationship, we learn about Pauline, a past girlfriend from the game Donkey kong, she returns then in 2006 but only as a friend. The princess Peach is the last heir of the Mushroom Kingdom where the citizens called Toads, are mushroom-like...
As in the writing for a movie script, every detail is well thought, from the personality of the characters, their background, family history, to their outfits and change of it to suit each new game. For example in Super Mario sunshine game, Mario wears a red t-shirt instead of his usual blue long-sleeved one, and put on sunglasses (for the sunshine!). Mario’s main occupation is plumbing but of course he has little time for it as his prime concern is to save the Princess. His brother Luigi is described also very kind but less hero-like, maybe shy.
Little is known about the Princess background, as if purposely left undeveloped. The plot is based on the princess ability “to undo the evil magic that Bowser had cast upon the Mushroom Kingdom”, and she is the only one to be able to do that.
Each new game reveals to us something new about a character. The princess personality is described as kind and noble, but appeared in some games mischievous and mainly eagerly helpful towards Mario. As with the other characters, there is an evolution with her personality through the games, she is somehow passive at the beginning, and become stronger, sometimes cheeky, or some other times wise.
The interaction between the characters has the same set up that a TV show, each game is like a new episode, sometimes we get new characters, a new challenge, an new anecdote, how and why the princess has been kidnapped “again”. Sometimes Bowser and Mario will join their forces to fight a common enemy. Even if the main plot is always to try to save the Princess Peach, each game has new little under plots.
Since 1985, the game industry has provided us with many more elaborated games, with better visual appearances and more depth in the scripts, from Lara Craft to massively multiplayer online role-playing games where multiple players interact in a virtual world. But for the little girl in me that still sometimes plays again, Mario will always be my hero!
