In spite of everything, it is possible to identify a certain amount of similarities in both men’s vision of humanity and social functioning.
Despite having apparently opposite approaches with their theories, they seem to meet at some points.
Rogers’s theory is based on an undeniable faith in human good nature, while Freud “tended to be quite pessimistic about human nature and was sceptical about our future” (Nye, 2000) as human race.
It is possible to say they do share a collective goal as both men join in their huge interest in humanity, its functioning or malfunctioning with a strong desire to help others to a better functioning.
Some similarities to be noted are their concept of the defence mechanisms, the anxiety and also the impact, influence sometimes negative, of the environment, parents and the society, society which for both men can sometimes be identified as quite restrictive.
Without a doubt one can say that both men are genuine in their approach to find explanations and solutions in human dysfunctional behaviour.
The content is the same but the forms are quite different.
